Tactical battle deepens

PA Wellington The tactical battle between N.Z.I. Enterprise and Atlantic! Privateer deepened yesterday as N.Z.l.’s lead narrowed to four kilometres and as the two yachts swept further away from the Whitbread round-the-world fleet. Latest computer positions placed Enterprise within 1500 km of Auckland, Atlantic Privateer right on its tail and their nearest rival, ÜBS Switzerland, 204kmastern. The race leaders continue to sail a similar line towards Auckland. Enterprise

was reported at latitude 47.33 s and Privateer at 47.12, only slightly to the north. ÜBS was further south but 2560 km from Auckland at the latest report. Lion New Zealand and Drum England vie for fourth and fifth places. Drum extended its lead overnight to 140 km retaining ninth place on handicap. The fleet was reported to be sailing in moderate conditions with winds of up to 25 knots.
