Three Ministers to be Privy Councillors
PA Wellington Three Cabinet Ministers will become members of the Privy Council, said the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Paul Reeves. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, and the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman, will be appointed to the council. Appointment is for life, and members are entitled to use the prefix “The Right Honourable” before their name.
Mr Palmer has been a Member of Parliament since 1979 and Deputy Prime Minister since 1984. Mr Tizard has been a Member of Parliament from 1957-60 and since 1963. He was Deputy Prime Minister in 1974-75 and has been a Cabinet Minister from 1972-75 and since 1984. Mr Colman has been a Member of Parliament since 1967 and a Cabinet Minister from 1972-75 and since last year. There are 18 other mem-
bers of the Privy Council in New Zealand, including the Prime Minister, Mr Lange and the former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon. Outside Britain, the appointment is largely regarded as an honour, the Prime Minister, long-serving Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice and Judges of the Court of Appeal usually being appointed. Meetings of the Privy Council have been held in New Zealand during six visits by the Queen, the most recent in 1981.
