Defamation appeal
PA Auckland The former Waitemata Mayor, Mr Tony Covic, has filed an application for a new trial in a defamation action against the Mayor, Mr Tim Shadbolt, and New Zealand Newspapers. The application was to be heard by the High Court in Auckland in the new year.
A High Court jury rulec recently that the “Aucklanc Star” had not defamed Mi Covic but awarded hint $6OOO damages for state ments made by Mr Shadboll in 1983. Mr Covic sued the “Star’ for $270,000 for alleged de famation and Mr Shadbol for $90,000.
