Basking ... in the rain
After seven days camping in the rain, the Thompson family, of Alexandra, Central Otago were keen to use their beach ball yesterday when the weather temporarily cleared. The Thompsons, (from left), Maree, aged 13, Genny (17), Scott (15), and Glenn (13), are camped in New Brighton. Their camping holiday began last week on the West Coast. Christmas Day at the camping ground was fairly damp and miserable. Their
mother, Mrs Rath Thompson, said the children did not think it felt much like Christmas. Even cooking Christmas dinner was difficult, but the car came in handy for taking them to and from the
camp kitchen — it was too wet to walk. She said the family expected to be basking in the sun on Christmas Day instead of stuck in their tents reading books. The Thompsons had not lost hope that better weather would come and in spite of clouds looming overhead yesterday it was shorts and T-shirts and down to the beach, In all 23mm of rain has fallen in Christchurch in the last two days.
