Noble Note after 2nd Timaru Cup

By

J. J. BOYLE

Two years ago the Riccarton trainers, Dave Kerr and John Bourne, saddled the runners that dominated the finish of the Timaru Cup. The Kerr-trained Clansman beat Noble Note by half a head. Noble Note returned to Washdyke last summer to win the Timaru Racing Club’s most valuable race, and he will be back there today in a bid to win it for a second time.

He goes into the race thoroughly seasoned and as winner of his last two races at the metric mile besides a last-start second over 1200 m at Riccarton and a fifth over a middle distance in the Canterbury Cup. But even the soundness of that form will not guarantee him the position of favourite — unless of course Canterbury Belle drops out of the field.

A start for Canterbury Belle was not certain yesterday. Her trainer, Dave Kerr, is anxious to find the best possible conditions for the star of his stable in her comeback race, and he was not cheered yesterday by news of rain at Washdyke. “As races go, the Timaru Cup is not all that important, and it is more important in my mind that a mare as good as she is should not be placed at risk when she has been away from racing for weeks,” Kerr said.

“There are great opportunities for her in the autumn, and by that time she will be thoroughly seasoned and ready for anything.” If Canterbury Belle is to be given her chance today she will be a big attraction for the Timaru club’s meeting for her first race since she won the Elders Stakes against a star-studded field in Brisbane in the winter. Even in her absence Riccarton stables could still supply the top contenders. In the Glen and Dainty Dish, winners of the two feature races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Christ-

mas meeting will surprise many if they do not play big roles in the finish along with Noble Note. Vrinsk, a stablemate of Canterbury Belle and a performer with something of a talent on rain-affected tracks, could find enough for Grant Cooksley to force his way into the finish of the Park Hill Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. He was placed on a soft track at Hokitika two starts back, then faded after pacemaking on a firm track at Riccarton. Others high on the fancied list are Samasaan and the Orari-trained Royal Adder.
