Cooksley back in

PA Auckland The Takanini jockey, Grant Cooksley, will ride at Ellerslie today. An appeal against a oneday suspension he incurred at Te Awamutu last Saturday was heard by the Waikato District appeal committee at Te Rapa on Tuesday. The committee heard all submissions and viewed videotapes of the Carter Holt Maiden, in which Cooksley was found guilty of careless riding. He allowed his mount, Beau’s Pride, to move in on Fiery Ville about 100 m out.

Though the committee, by a majority decision, found that there was interference and that Cooksley was S of careless riding, it id that the one-day penalty was more severe than that imposed on another rider, Brian York, for more serious interference in the event. York was fined $325.

Accordingly, the appeal was allowed in part. The suspension was cancelled and instead a fine of $2OO was imposed on Cooksley. The $lOO deposit fee was forfeited as part of the fine.
