Freightman in line for Ashburton Cup victory

By

G. K. YULE

Freightman has come into favour for the D.B. Ashburton Cup today with the scratching of Really Konkin as the result of a blood disorder.

Freightman has raced with distinction in much stronger fields and his handicap of 30m in the Ashburton Trotting Club’s feature is unlikely to prove prohibitive.

Greg Patron, to be driven by Richard Brosnan, was far from disgraced when he dead-heated for Fifth in the main race at Rangiora last Saturday. But for locking wheels with another rival at a vital stage of the race, he could well have returned a dividend. He is a proven stayer and should make a bold bid, espcially as he will receive a start of 30m from Freightman. Skipper Dale, so impres-

sive in his racing in Canterbury this season, crashed badly at his most recent start at Alexandra Park on December 7. He, too, has impressed as a stayer of potential, having been successful over the distance in 4min 12.3 s at Addington on November 23. He has had a chance to freshen since his race in Auckland and it will be surprising if he fails to show up. Winning Note, one of the speediest pacers in the intermediate classes, has had only one start on this campaign. He has done well

lately at trials and could well prove to be a leading contender. Coastal Trader and Montrose could be the pick of the others on the front, while big runs are likely from Mighty Me and also the backmarker, Hands Down, which could be a major threat should there be any loitering in the middle stages. Simon Katz, Wedgewood and Ranger Globe form a likely trio in the second leg, the 100 Pipers Handicap, one of the more open fields on the programme.
