AUSTRALIA All sectors firm

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer on Tuesday, with end-of-year book squaring pushing the market up. Trading was restricted to half a day. The market will reopen tomorrow. At the close of trading the all-ordinaries index had gained 3.7 points to 994.4, the allindustrials index improved 4.6 points to 1469.2, and the allresources index put on 2.9 points to 628.0. The gold index was up 2.4 points to 480.9. Turnover was 27.6 M shares, worth sAust47.2M, rises outnumbering falls 151 to 139. Predictions of a fresh raid on BHP by the Bell chief, Mr Robert Holmes aCourt failed to eventuate. BHP closed 6c up at 876 after reaching a high of 880 with about 500,000 shares traded. Among other market leaders Bell Resources fell 14c to 510 and CSR, with about 1.76 M shares traded, lost 1c to 358. Heavy-weight miners traded thinly, but with a firmer bias, the majors recording gains. Peko gained 10c to 495, CRA 6c to 536, MIM 3c to 265 and Western Mining 2c to 317. Gold stocks were firmer, with Emperor up 15c to 285, Sons of Gwalia 5c to 300 and Central Norseman 4c to 610. x In the oil and gas sector Bridge Oil was heavily traded, with about 700,000 shares sold overseas in special sales. It finished unchanged at 400 while Santos lost 2c to 526.

About 6M Pioneer Concrete shares were traded, making it the day’s most traded share. It surged up 8c to 248. Elsewhere on the industrial board, lEL gained 26c to 650 ex-bonus, the Bell Group put on 10c to 610 and Coles gained 3c to 417. Adsteam lost 10c to 980 and Fairfax 2c to 650.
