Zoning and the arts

Sir,—lt is good to read about the arrival of the two Canadian glass artists in Canterbury and I hope that they are permitted to practise their craft in the old Tai Tapu dairy factory, an ideal building which I have coveted for years. Their problems with the zoning laws are unfortunate and perhaps unnecessary, as in recent years, with the encouragement of regional arts councils and the Crafts Council, an increasing number of local bodies have welcomed this sort of enterprise. Rural councils in particular are recognising the importance of broadening the economic base of a hard-hit, largely agricultural populace, while enriching the cultural fabric of country life. So, the moral is, “If at first you don’t succeed, try another country.” They are not all bad.—Yours, etc., COLIN SLADE, President, Crafts Council of N.Z. December 19, 1985.
