More swindle charges

Two Dunedin men have been arrested after further police inquiries into an alleged $640,000 swindle involving gold bullion with cheques which the police said were forged. A man, aged 33, appeared in the District Court at Dunedin on Tuesday charged with receiving 836 stolen cheques. Another man, aged 27,

will appear in the District Court at Dunedin tomorrow charged with theft as a servant and taking the cheques. Inquiries into the conspiracy have continued throughout New Zealand since Friday. The number' of persons arrested in connection with the investigation now stands at five.

Two men and a woman were remanded on bail without plea when they appeared in the District Court in Christchurch on Monday. Trevor Alan Lee, aged 36, a contractor, of Invercargill; Barry Stephen Shirreffs, aged 37, a builder, of Queenstown; and Kay Linda Kennedy, aged 32, a solo mother, of Christchurch,

each appeared on two charges of using National Bank cheques, personalised in the name of the Trustees Executors and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd, to obtain a pecuniary advantage. It is alleged that the offences were committed in Timaru and Oamaru on December 20.
