Injured Crowe out

The New Zealand batsman, Jeff Crowe, has dropped out of the Auckland team for the Shell Cup games against Canterbury and Otago. He has been replaced by Tom Hellaby, the Papatoetoe all rounder.

The leg injury Crowe suffered in the third test against Australia at Perth has proved slow to heal, and he was advised to rest it further.

“It’s not as if I couldn’t play, but there were doubts whether I could give 100 per cent, and the danger that I could make it worse,” said Crowe last evening. “I’m hoping to be fit for the game against Central Districts on January 31 at Eden Park, particularly as Martin (his younger brother) will be playing for Central Districts.”

Crowe is very keen to be

fit for the New Zealand oneday team for the Benson and Hedges series in Australia. The team will be announced after the games on January 31. The addition of Hellaby to the Auckland touring 12 gives the selectors both an in-form batsman and another bowler.

Auckland’s first game is against Canterbury, at Ashburton, tomorrow.
