Another boy dies after icy immersion

NZPA-Reuter Boston A 10-year-old boy lost a fight for life yesterday after falling through ice and spending two hours at the bottom of a freezing lake near his home on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Doctors gave blood transfusions to raise Jeffrey Goodale’s body temperature but he died at Massachusetts General Hospital about 36 hours after being pulled from the lake on Sunday. The boy fell through the ice of snow-covered Lake Tashmoo, at Martha’s Vineyard, 200 metres from shore while chasing his dog. He was pulled from the lake by divers and found to be suffering from hypothermia. His body temperature was below 21deg.

After he was flown to the hospital by helicopter doctors at first gave him a chance of living, saying that icy temperatures can sometimes help a person’s survival by slowing the body’s metabolism considerably, thus minimising its need to sustain life.
