Emergency grants to refugees

PA Wellington The National Council of Churches’ Christmas appeal has made two emergency grants to assist refugees returning to Nicaragua and Uganda. , : The grants of ah initial $5OOO for refugees in Nicaragua and $2500 for Ugandan refugees were taken from donations made to the 1985 appeal. Another part of the N.C.C.’s Christmas : appeal will be the lighting of 14,000 peace candles in homes and churches and carol singing events through the Christ-mas-New Year period. More than 2000 New Zealand churches and about 500,000 New Zealand Christians are expected to support the 1985 N.C.C. Christmas appeal which has provided world-wide aid for 40 years. The appeal organiser, the Rev. Brian Turner, said thousands of children involved in the Caring Kiwi Club of the National Council of Churches, Sunday schools and churches were raising money for the appeal.
