Union backs steel move
PA Wellington The largest union in the steel industry, the New Zealand Engineers’ Union, yesterday gave the Government’s move to restructure New Zealand Steel finances a vote of “qualified support”. The union’s national secretary, Mr Rex Jones, said that union officials had been discussing the future of the expansion with the company.
The union was “extremely pleased” that the Government’s moves would provide job security for the 1000 employed on the expansion, and a continued life line for the -rural community of Waiuku where the steel mill was sited, he said. The union’s only reservation was that it had not yet seen details of the financial package. Mr Jones said he was concerned that the pro-
posals could be a case of ‘socialising the losses and privatising the profits.” The union was concerned that local or overseas-companies did not wind up making big profits at the expense of public investment in New Zealand Steel. The union’s concern now was not with, laying the blame for the problems, but with establishing a viable future for the steel industry.
