Trampers caught by flood
Greymouth reporter A rope was used to rescue two trampers trapped on a small island in the Deception River near Otira on Sunday afternoon. Two brothers, Darryl and David Cornish, of Christchurch, had been trekking up the river for about 30 minutes when the river level rose in a flood. The two were about three metres out, but strong currents prevented them from crossing. Constable Philip Lynch, of Otira, and a helper threw a rope to the men, who crossed over safely. They had been seen by a group Of railway workers who notified, the police.
