Another pay day for Patterson
Bob Patterson (Southbridge) could be excused for having a liking for the Beckenham greens. Earlier this month he won the final of the Countrywide singles there, and today he will be chasing another winner’s cheque in the Beckenham club’s $lBOO invitation pairs tournament. Because of rain on Sunday the final has been delayed until this morning and Patterson will be competing with Robin Howman (Bumside) for the first prize of $5OO. Patterson has Colin Lowery as his lead, while Howman’s partner is Lyn Hanger. In the semi-finals last evening, Patterson had a
convincing 21-9 win over the Beckenham greenkeeper, Bill Fiecken, who had Arch White leading for him. Howman had to work a little harder. He faced his Burnside clubmate, Ken Prebble, whose lead was Stewart Buttar. Howman led most of the way, but Prebble, a top junior last season, levelled the scores at 15-15 with two ends to play. However, Howman took the last two ends without too many problems. There were some excellent games in the semifinals, with Howman’s clash with Bernie Johns (Linwood) providing the best finish. Johns, whose partner was Bill McDonald, scored a five on the penultimate end and
twice he had the points he needed on the last end until Howman burnt the head with clean drives to the jack, the second after the bell. Results.— Semi-finals.—B. Patterson (Southbridge) beat M. Robinson (Barrington), 21-16; W. Fiecken (Beckenham) beat J.. Saundercock (Linwood), 18-17; K. Prebble (Burnside) beat M. Ryan (Beckenham) 22-21; R. Howman (Burnside) beat B. Johns (Linwood), 18-17.
