NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in lacklustre trading with a shortage of sellers and end-of-year book squaring forcing prices up, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had gained 3.8 points to 990.4, the all industrials had improved 5.1 points to 1463.9 and the all resources index had put on 2.7 points to 624.9. The gold index was up 6.5 points to 812.6. Turnover was 25.5 M shares, worth $35.9M, with rises outnumbering falls by 178 to 145.
