Winnie Mandela under arrest
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg The black nationalist leader, Winnie Mandela, had been arrested by South African police yesterday for defiantly returning to her home in Soweto township, said a police spokesman. Captain Henry Beck, of police headquarters, said Mrs Mandela, the wife of the jailed guerrilla leader, Nelson Mandela, was arrested under security legislation for contravening a restriction order.
She had earlier been dragged out of her Soweto
home, near Johannesburg, by security policemen after the Government relaxed long-standing banishment orders against her. She was told that Soweto was out of bounds. Her lawyer said that she later returned to Soweto knowingly risking arrest. Her arrest seemed certain to'attract widespread condemnation overseas, where Governments have applied unprecedented pressure on South Africa to abandon apartheid. Earlier report, page 10.
