N.Z. not in whale survey
Wellington reporter The 1985-86 whale survey of the southern oceans contains no New Zealanders, the first time they have missed for four years. Two New Zealanders had been due to go on the survey — Mr Paul Ensor and Miss Jeni Hassett, both marine biologists. But both were trapped aboard the Australian supply ship Nella Dan in the ice for six weeks and by the time they were rescued it was too late for them to join the survey. Instead, the Fisheries
Research Division of the Ministry of Fisheries found a last-minute replacement for them in an American, Mr Ken Balcolm. He is an experienced whale observer and world-renowned photographer of whales. Mr Martin Cawthorn, of the Fisheries Research Division, said it was unfortunate Mr Ensor could not go as he
was now most experienced. But New Zealand would still get the information from written reports. Mr Ensor’s unavailability was doubly unfortunate because the crew on the Soviet vessel Vyderzhanniy No. 36 was inexperienced. It had now left Wellington to join the three Japanese survey ships, he said.
