Theft may ruin trip
The youngest member of the Canterbury surf lifesaving team to tour Victoria next month faces serious financial difficulties with the team’s departure only 11 days away. Peter Walker, aged 17, was patrolling his club’s beach at New. Brighton ,on Saturday when his bag was stolen from the clubhouse. Walker had just changed his spending money for the trip into Australian currency. As well as the money and the bag, he lost two wetsuit training tops, malibu board training knee pads, costumes and towels, board shorts, a first-aid kit and competition hats. Walker left his job about a month ago to train for the trip and says that he will now have to think about selling his bike, his only tangible asset, to get some money for the tour. The young New Brighton lifeguard’s commitment to training had shown out at the most recent competition; when he won all his four events. Walker is national champion'in surf-ski rescue and has also won the Canterbury iron-man title in addition to several other district championships in the last two ' seasons.
