Akaroa returns to rowing

After being in recess for 14 years, the Akaroa Rowing Club must have been well pleased with its re-entry into the sport at the Lion Brown 125th annual Marlborough rowing championships on Picton Harbour at the week-end.

The novice scullers, Chris and John Stewart, won for the club its first provincial title since 1961 with a win in the intermediate double sculls.

Bernie Reid, the man responsible for the club’s resurgence, finished a fine second in the premier singles after leading for most of the distance. With only three representatives at the regatta, Akaroa managed a fine seventh placing over alt Although Avon (Christchurch) was a clear winner, some of the less dominant clubs provided the closest. Cure (Kaiapoi) recorded a fine win in the men’s novice eights after rowing much of the distance with only seven men due to gear failure. In the men’s novice fours the club’s No. 2 crew was left to carry the day after the No. 1 crew swamped before they started and had to be rescued from the water before their boat broke in half.

Cure’s determination throughout the regatta brought its rewards with a fourth placing ahead of the much more fancied Canterbury club. Canterbury’s points came mainly in the women’s events.
