Ship passengers rescued

NZPA-Reuter Manila Rescue ships picked up 48 survivors and two bodies from the South China Sea yesterday after a Philippines ferry capsized and sank with more than 100 people aboard. A Coast Guard official,

Captain Daniel Delgado, said that it was not known exactly how many people were on the ferry Asuncion when it sank on Wednesday off the Philippines island of Calavite.

Coast guards said earlier, that the 142-ton ferry was carrying 200 people when it

sank in high seas about 90 miles south-west of Manila.

Captain Delgado said that it had a crew of 15 and capacity for 107 passengers. Three people were rescued hours after the ferry foundered on a voyage to Manila from the central Philippines island of Palawan.
