Promising pair take awards

Scott Bowden (Shirley Boys’ High. School) and Tracy Phillips (Wanganui High School) were named the most promising boy and girl athletes at the recent Mount Cook New Zealand secondary school track and field games at Dunedin. The awards were sponsored by Gold Crest Muesli Bars and earned the winners a gold cup and a $4OO training award. Bowden won the 400 m final in 47.89 s and broke the qualifying time for the world junior track and field championships in Athens next year.

It was initially reported that Bowden had failed to break the qualifying time for Athens, but the time has since been revised by the

national selectors, and Bowden’s record at Dunedin is now inside the revised time. '

Phillips also qualified for the world junior championships. She won the high jump with a New Zealand junior record of 1.83 m.

Both Bowden and Phillips completed the meeting by. anchoring their respective’ school teams to wins in the 4 x 400 m relay finals. The pair have been, selected in the New Zealand secondary schools’ team to meet an Australian team in a series of three internationals in January. The meetings, sponsored by Gold Crest, are in Auckland on January 18 and 25 and Hamilton on January 22.
