One city
Sir,—Eric Dash suggests that civic unity should reflect the perceived unity of the church under "... the same Master.” A quick scan of the telephone book reveals over 32 separate and independent Christian churches, to say nothing of the many other “local”, religions. Anglican and Catholic parishes number over 70 in the urban area alone. Each parish provides a service to a particular community of interest, generally using elected representatives. We are a nation of gentle anarchists, and it will take more than rhetoric or a commission to persuade us to surrender our right to be different, either as, individuals, or as communities.—Yours, etc., NIGEL WILLIAMS.
