Alert at airport

Emergency services in Christchurch were on standby alert for about 20 minutes late last evening after a Boeing 737 cargo plane from Auckland reported problems with its flaps not retracting after take-off.

The plane, from Auckland, was unable to fully retract its flaps and had to reduce its speed.

However, by the time it reached Christchurch at

11.50 p.m. the pilot had managed to retract most of the flaps and the plane was able to land safely, said an air traffic radar controller at Christchurch Airport. Only the two pilots were aboard the cargo plane. The police said emergency services were on standby for about 20 minutes.
