Quiet day at beaches

Canterbury surf life-sav-ing patrols had another quiet day at Christchurch beaches yesterday.

No rescue was made at any of the 10 patrolled beaches.

Next Monday and Tuesday would probably be “crunch days” for lifeguards as many people celebrated at end-of-year work functions, said the co-ordinator of the beach patrols, Mr Geoff Barry. In hot weather a lot of people tended to take to the beaches after they had been drinking. People who swam after drinking and in their clothes were a problem for lifeguards, Mr Barry said.

“Drink is a contributing factor, of course, but the biggest hassle is trying to rescue people who are wearing their clothes," he said.

The weight of the clothes could drag both the person being rescued and the rescuer down, said Mr Barry. “It is really just a matter of using some common sense,” he said.
