Submissions on quality of teaching
PA Wellington More than 50 submissions have already been made to a Parliamentary select committee’s investigation into the quality of teaching, the committee’s chairman, Mr Noel Scott, said yesterday. The investigation, announced last month, is the first to be set up under new Standing Orders. It will concentrate on the early childhood, primary and secondary sections of education. Mr Scott said reaction to the inquiry assumed that the only focus was a negative one concerned with judgments about the quality of the individual teacher’s performance. That was a vital factor, but there were other important elements such as the community and its expectations, the Government and its administration, finances and resources, staffing levels, and pupils’ needs and expectations.
The committee intends to report a summary of its findings and recommendations to Parliament in about six months.
