N.Z. ‘needs massive immigration’
PA Wellington New Zealand needs a big immigration programme to lift itself out of depression and guarantee its future as an independent nation, the Democratic Party says. The Planning Council’s conclusion that New Zealand’s population was rapidly ageing made this clear, the party’s spokesman on national development, Mr Terry Heffernan, said. “Only an orderly programme of population growth will give New Zealand the economic strength it must have if it is to guarantee its future as a vigorous and independant nation.”
The council’s report, “New Zealand Population: Trends and their Policy Implications,” released earlieryesterday, said that even if there were a net immigration of 5000 people a year for the next 15 years the population would not reach 3.75 million by the year 2000.
