Abortion claim ‘nonsense’

PA Wellington The Planning Council’s claim that the abortion rate did not contribute to keeping down the country’s population levels was “nonsense,” it has been asserted.

Mr Peter Barrie-Martin, immediate past national president of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child, said that in the last year an eighth of the 7275 children conceived in New Zealand were aborted.

“To say that this fact is not reducing our birth rate is nonsense,” he said. “Twelve years ago the total number of abortions including illegal ones and those done in Australia or New Zealand would be some 2000.

“Making allowance for bias, the number of abortions has at least doubled since our birth rate started declining.

“It is clear that our birthrate has in fact declined some 4000 to 5000 in recent years because of the introduction of abortion on request,” said Mr BarrieMartin.
