Petition on daylight time
PA Wellington A petition to Parliament from the small Northland town of Ararua asking for daylight time to be shortened is unlikely to be acted upon by the Government. The petition, signed by more than 12,000 people, asked for daylight time to be cut back to start at the end of the school year instead of the end of October and finish on the first Sundav in MarchPamament’s Internal Af-
fairs and Local Government select committee has referred the petition to the Government for “consideration" - falling short of a recommendation for “favourable consideration” or “most favourable consideration”. The chairman of the committee, Mr T. J. Young (Lab., Eastern Hutt), told NZPA the committee had investigated the petitioners’ claims that the present period of daylight time was
producing a fall-off in milk production and more accidents.
Checks with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Accident Compensation Corporation had shown no basis for the assertions, he said.
The committee had also taken into account a survey by the Department of Internal Affairs that showed strong public support for daylight lane. ,
