Salmon contest N.Z.’s richest
New Zealand’s richest salmon fishing competition will be held on the Waitaki River from March 7 to 10 next year. Whoever catches the big!;est salmon over 20kg 44.093 pounds) will win a Honda City car, plus cash prizes. Last year, more than 700 salmon were captured by the 600 contestants. “Last season the Waitaki produced some of the biggest salmon bags in recent
years, and the early arrival of salmon off the river mouth this season indicates another bumper year,” said the chairman of the organising committee, Mr Colin Paterson. Fishing the sea beyond the surf line from a boat will not be allowed in this year’s competition. “Safety is paramount, and this should discourage boat fishermen from crossing the bar and risking boat damage,” said Mr Paterson.
