AUSTRALIA Stocks firmer at close

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian stocks closed firmer for the second consecutive session with greater overseas interest and heavy buying in BHP leading the market up, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had increased 5.4 points to 986.0, the all industrials had fallen 1.7 points to 1454.8 and the all resources index had gained 10.3 points to 624.1. The gold index was down 10.8 points to 804.0.

Turnover was 65M shares worth $123.2M, with falls outnumbering rises by 224 to 187. Brokers said profits from Wall Street had filtered through into the local market and that the market leaders would have risen more but for a shortage of scrip. About 3.5 M BHP shares were traded in Sydney and Melbourne, triggering rumours of a friendly company pushing up the stock’s price to force Bell’s chief, Mr Robert Holmes aCourt, to play his hand. BHP closed 30c up at 870 after reaching a high of 876. Among other market leaders Bell Resources put on 20c to 510 and CSR 1c to 363.
