Tough rescues divers’ mission

PA Auckland Lifeguards here have formed a special dive rescue squad trained to work in extreme conditions. It was set up in response to the death of the Mt Albert schoolboy, Michael Stewart, who drowned when he was swept into a flooded stormwater culvert earlier this month. The squad of six, experienced divers, has begun specialised training. Commercial divers were teaching them to use underwater lighting and cutting equipment, and how to work

in confined spaces or in fast currents. After six hours intensive training each night, the Moray Industries-sponsored squad would be in operation by Christmas. It would be on 24-hour call with Auckland’s Winfield rescue helicopter. A Surf Life saving Association spokesman, Mr Simon Barton, said the lifeguards would tackle overturned boats, cars that have run off the road into water, and nil-visibility diving in drains.
