Reagans mourn with bereaved
NZPA-AP Fort Campbell, Kentucky The President of the United States, Mr Ronald Reagan, offered solace to a mourning fiancee, and Nancy Reagan dabbed her eyes as dozens of families grieved yesterday at a
memorial service for the 248 soldiers killed when their jetliner crashed returning from the Middle East. For nearly an hour the President slowly walked the aisles in a bunting-festooned hangar at Fort Campbell, consoling 300 relatives and
friends of the dead, all members of the 101st Airborne Division. A small girl clutched a teddy-bear as she stared at the television cameras focusing on her wide-eyed gaze. When Mr Reagan approached she leaned back and began to wail.
Tracey Walker, of Hopkinsville, who was engaged to be married to one of the dead soldiers, Jeff Kee, wept openly as the Reagans approached. She clung to the President as he spoke to her and continued to weep as he walked away. The division’s band
played slow tunes as the Reagans spoke to the families. The President embraced small children and hugged weeping wives and mothers. Mrs Reagan clutched a white hankerchief and frequently dabbed her eyes.
