Beaches busier
Warmer weather encouraged more swimmers to Christchurch beaches yesterday, but no rescues by surf patrollers were needed. About six swimmers enjoyed the water at Taylor’s Mistake. A similar number swam at Sumner, South Brighton, and New Brighton beaches, said the patrols’ co-ordinator, Mr Geoff Barry. The surf was light, about a half-metre high. Once the
easterly wind came up, the surf became “a bit choppy,” he said. The water temperature reached a pleasant 16 deg. People going to Spencer Park beach this week should avoid swimming near a big hole about 100 metres to the right of the beach clubhouse, said Mr Barry. The hole could be dangerous. People should make sure they swim between the flags.
