Teachers’ pay claim hearing delayed
PA Wellington Secondary school teachers will have to wait two days before their pay claim is heard by the Education Services Committee. The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association was to have met the committee yesterday, but the meeting has been postponed until tomorrow because a Cabinet meeting on Monday failed to complete its business. The president of the association, Mr Tony Steele, has repeatedly warned the Government of the importance of getting the claim near settlement before Christmas, but yesterday took a low-key attitude to the delay. “We are giving them the benefit of the doubt,” Mr. Steele said. “Given the fact that it is nearly Christmas,
it is a bit of Christmas spirit on our part.” Mr Steele said the delay had caused problems, with people cancelling and rebooking flights to Wellington.
After all the delays the wage offer, when it came, had better be a good one, he said.
