Gavaskar sets test record

NZPA-AAP Adelaide After a day dominated by the batting of the Indian veteran, Sunil Gavaskar, India and Australia played out the tamest of draws in the first test at Adelaide Oval yesterday. At stumps on the fifth and final day, Australia was 17 for none in its second innings — still 122 runs behind. David Boon was not out 11 and Geoff Marsh, who deputised for a tired Wayne Phillips, was on two. But while the game had a disappointing end Gavaskar gave the small crowd something to cheer about by passing two milestones. First he posted his 31st test century and then he became the first man to score more than 9000 runs in test cricket. Gavaskar finished with an unbeaten 166 in 551 minutes at the crease.

He shared in some handy partnerships for India, including a record tenthwicket stand of 94 with Shivlal Yadav who was last man out for 41.
