Govt funds for creches

PA Wellington The Government has decided to provide accommodation for student creches at teachers’ colleges and technical institutes. The creches, which will be user-pays, and run by local committees, will be implemented progressively with priority going to the most urgent cases, said the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall.

1 “By providing the accom- * modation as a full charge - against educational funds, I ! believe the Government is I going a considerable way towards meeting the special 1 needs of students with ' young children,” he said. ' Mr Marhall said the Government bad decided also to fully fund all student amenities, including cafeterias and student common rooms.

The decision reversed one made in 1981, under which student associations were expected to pay half the costs of all amenity buildings.

“Reinstatement of the original policy will enable student associations to embark with greater confidence on the planning of the new buildings or upgrading of existing ones," Mr Marshall said.
