Handicap conditions should suit Page Boy

Special correspondent Wellington Page Boy’s latest racing has been under weight-for-age conditions but back to handicaps, he could come out on top in the Gressier Lodge Handicap, the first leg of the Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s T.A.B. double at Otaki today. At the start of the month, Page Boy was ninth in Kingdom Bay’s Potter Stakes and the time before he was eighth in the Canterbury Gold Cup. In his other run at Riccarton, Page Boy was third in the Churchill Stakes. His only other outing was a success over 1400 m at Awapuni last month.

At his fifth attempt for the term and up to 2000 m, Page Boy should run strongly. His 56kg is a couple under the weight-for-age scale. He shares the top weight with Mr Trick, a previous winner in Australia, preparing for holiday racing, Mr Trick has run two excellent sprints lately, second behind Otoia Belle at Woodville and then he ran an excellent third in the Levin Cup Stakes, also under weight-for-age conditions. Like Page Boy, he drops a couple of kilos for today’s contest. Mussella missed in the Wanganui Cup. Before, she won the Summer Handicap at Woodville last month and her form has been useful.

Mighty Vain and H Vento were third and fourth in the Rapid Centennial Cup last week. Mighty Vain held his ground impressively and II Vento his to the line.

Go Henry finished third in the South Australian Handicap at Riccarton and finished ninth in the New Zealand Cup. Giveaway’s form is fair, though he failed to fire at Waipukurau and Trentham at his most recent outings. Royal Seal, the Evergreen Lodge winner, disappointed at Cambridge and at Otaki last Saturday, but can do better.

Call Me Stumpy raced fairly at Te Aroha while there the run of Norfolk Bard will attract attention. His effort to be placed at Trentham in the Odlins Plate, just a nose from Otehi Gold, was first rate. On that effort he will be a big chance. The second leg is to be staged on the Night Eruption Handicap and Go Mamma is favoured to complete a double for the meeting.

On Saturday the mare won the Stewards’ Handicap and it will come as little surprise if she repeats the dose in this one. She was placed at Waipukurau at her previous outing. By Rein and Blanceau, fresh runners at the meeting, look strong opponents. By Rein missed in the Odlins Plate, but he won at Levin the time before.
