Shooter injured

Greymouth reporter A deer shooter was injured when a helicopter in which he was a passenger crashed in South Westland about 5.30 a.m. yesterday. The man, David Francis Hetherington, of Fox Glacier, was reported in a satisfactory condition in the Grey Hospital yesterday with a broken pelvis and broken leg. The pilot of the helicopter, James Scott, was uninjured. The Hughes 500 aircraft went down during a shooting expedition in the Paringa Valley. Mr Hetherington was seen lying some distance from the crashed machine by another helicopter pilot, Martin Nolan, who was flying in the area at the time. Mr Scott had set off after the crash, and tramped almost five kilometres to a farmhouse to get help. Another helicopter was alerted and Mr Nolan returned to pick up Mr Hetherington and fly him to Greymouth. The cause of the accident was unknown. It was believed the crashed machine would be written off.
