Gate repairs finished

PA Invercargill Repairs to cracked gates at Manapouri power station were completed on Saturday nearly two days ahead of schedule.

In spite of “significant” problems, repairs during the main shutdown were completed 42 hours inside the deadline, said the Ministry of Energy Electricity Division’s generation engineer in Dunedin, Mr Don Smith. A wide range of secondary repairs was done during the shutdown, which began

on December 4. In view of good progress during this shutdown, Mr Smith did not expect there would be another big shutdown until 1989 or 1990. The biggest problem

faced by workers was the effect of exceptionally high tides on bulkheads at the top of the tailrace to prevent water entering the draft tube manifold from the sea.
