Maiden call at Lyttelton

The Tasman Express Line’s second vessel, the Canterbury Express, is due to make her maiden call at Lyttelton today. The 1597-ton container vessel is a sister ship to the Auckland Express, which began its Tasman run in September. Both ships are fitted with two cranes capable of handling 20ft. and 40ft containers, making it possible for them to use conventional berths.

The Canterbury Express was built in Shanghai 18 months ago. She is chartered from a German shipping firm. Both ships will sail a regular run between Lyttelton, Wellington, Onehunga, Sydney and Melbourne, with a service frequency of nine days at each port of call. The Canterbury Express will unload containers at Lyttelton today, and will remain in port until tomorrow for a special christening ceremony at the Number 3 East wharf.
