Christmas spirit

Sir,—Christmas is the time we start behaving more humanely towards one another; but after the Christmas spirit has died down, and liquid spirit has turned into hangovers and other misery, we return to our usual way of life and become “strangers.” I propose a complete turnabout and suggest we select one week each year in which we abuse one another, call each other names, exploit our fellow person for profits and personal gain, and call this “the let-off-steam week.” For the other 51 weeks we apply genuine Christmas

or Christian spirit and begin helping, loving, comforting and in general being friendly towards one another. Perhaps then, one day when we are singing “Peace on Earth,” we not only mean it, but it could actually be a reality. — Yours, etc., J. P. STUART. December 16, 1985.
