Bangladesh lifts ban
NZPA-Reuter Dhaka Bangladesh has announced that a ban on political activity will be lifted from January 1, but main Opposition groups have vowed to go ahead with their protest plans. “It is only partial recognition of the people’s demands for an immediate restoration of civil rule, hence the question of stepping back does not arise at all,” said Kamal Hossein, a leader of a 15-party Opposition alii-
ance. The President, Lieuten-ant-General Hossein Ershad, who has ruled under martial law for almost four years, said in a broadcast on the eve of the fourteenth anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence that he would lift a nine-month-old ban on open political activity from January 1 to prepare for elections “within the shortest possible time”. He gave no date for the elections.
