‘Operation Santa’

The President of the Waimairi Lions Club, Mr Ross McPherson, and representatives of the New Zealand Foster Care Federation with a few of the 5000 toys and gifts which have been given to the club’s “Operation Santa” appeal.

From the federation (from left) are Mesdames Marlene Wembley, Mary Moodie, and Margaret O’Keefe.

The Gifts were being sorted last evening after being collected from various Hallensteins branches which acted as toy depots. Parents or foster parents of needy children were invited to select presents, which will be wrapped by club members and distributed on Christmas Eve by Father

Christmas to the children’s homes.

At present, the club is visiting many Christchurch rest homes as part of “Operation Santa,” which has been going for seven years. Mr McPherson thanked the public for a “terrific response.” Another club member, Mr lan Horrell, said that tragically Christmas was a time when many children were put into homes because of family break-ups caused by festive stresses, and that the gifts would help soften the circumstances.
