Young Lord and Lord Paul hold strong appeal at Invercargill

Special correspondent Invercargill Young Lord and Lord Paul, two talented sons of Lordship, promise to be two principals in the finish of the Tranzealand Handicap, the first leg of the Invercargill T.A.B. double today. Scurry, an outstanding second at his last start, and Springfield Countess, which

is on the brink of winning form, should offer them most opposition. Young Lord, a four-year-old closely related to Robin Dundee, the dam of the world champion North American free-for-aller, Genghis Khan (1:51.8), is a member of the powerful Devery string with a big future ahead of him. The south’s most established reinsman, Henry Skinner, one not known for outbursts of enthusiasm, spoke highly of Young Lord after he reined him to a top last success at the Wairio meeting. He had two behind him starting the last 800 m and paced that section, post to post, round his rivals and wide on the turn, in 58.85. He won “Horse of the Day” honours for his showing. Lord Paul won “Horse of the Day” honours with a remarkable last to first charge at the Wyndham meeting last month. Although only fifth in a record run 3200 m at his last start at Wairio, he was running on powerfully and has to be respected. Scurry, stronger

and more reliable this season, won full marks for his last start second to Queen’s Advocate at the Wairio meeting. The Sir Dalrae gelding was reliably clocked, post to post, to pace his last 800 m in better than 57s that day. Queen’s Advocate revealed rare grit in his Southland record 3200 m success at the Wairio meeting. Even from 10m he must be respected again. Springfield Countess, conqueror of Chipaluck in the Southland Oaks last season, is poised to regain winning form. Her last start second was accompanied by high hopes of an immediate winning run.

Trish Mist, probably the most exciting prospect in Southland in the looser classes, will be all the rage for the second leg, the Prime Time Video Mobile Pace. The oustanding Transport Chip mare is destined for the top, judging by her exceptional last start success at the Wyndham meeting. She is held in the highest regard.
