‘Mayor Tim’ appeal

Christchurch readers may have been a little puzzled on Saturday to see advertisements in their newspapers for “Mayor Tim’s Defence Fund.”

The fund-raising campaign has been organised by a Waitemata city councillor who is concerned about the big legal bill facing the Mayor of Waitemata, Mr Tim Shadbolt.

Cr Gary Taylor hopes to raise $40,000 to pay the bill, which followed the defamation case brought against Mr Shadbolt earlier this year by the former Mayor of Waitemata, Mr Tony Covic.

Although the Court ordered Mr Shadbolt to pay only $6500 damages, the

total legal bill was $40,000. Advertisements explaining Mr Shadbolt’s monetary problems were placed in Saturday newspapers in the four main centres.

They were inserted by Cr Taylor who says that people should help Mr Shadbolt because he is “the sort of person who is always helping others” and he appeals for the public to give Mr Shadbolt “a happy Christmas.”

Mr Shadbolt has said that he is prepared to work off the debt by continuing with his speaking engagements throughout New Zealand but Cr Taylor felt that this would take Mr Shadbolt away from the council table too often.
