Prison escaper still at large
A man who escaped from Addington Prison on Friday by leaping over roof tops and off a 9m wall, was still at large last evening. Mark Huia Bain, aged 25, a sickness beneficiary, had been charged with the armed robbery of a Bishopdale supermarket on November 28.
He has been described by the police as dangerous and should not be approached. Bain made his escape about 4.10 p.m. while nine men were being taken from a secure yard into the prison. Three men broke away
and ran in different directions. They all climbed on to an office roof and Bain and another man jumped across a three-metre gap to the roof of another building. The leap was made about 7m above the ground. The two other men were caught but Bain climbed on to the 9m high prison wall and leaped to the ground, clearing a barbed wire fence. It is thought he injured a foot in the, jump. He then limped to a waiting car in Poulson Street. Bain has been convicted of escaping three times since 1980. He escaped from
Paparua Prison twice last year — once when he went for a cross-country run and did not return. He is described as a Maori, of thin build, 173 cm (sft Bin) tall, with tattoos on a wrist, forearms and chest. He was wearing blue trousers and a blue sweatshirt. He had been remanded in custody to December 11 after appearing in court on armed robbery charges. About $2OOO had been stolen from staff at Woolworth’s Bishopdale supermarket at the point of a sawn-off shotgun.
