Surf boat win

NZPA-AAP Sydney New Zealand yesterday beat New South Wales’ top crews to win the 15km Mazda Surf Boat Classic from the southern Sydney suburbs of Sans Souci to Cronulla. The New Zealand Midway crew led from start to finish with only the defending champion North Cronulla putting it under pressure. The relatively calm seas helped Midway to a new record when it broke last year’s time of 2hr Imin by 37 minutes. Earlier, the swell played a major part of the race

with North Cronulla gaining ground on Midway in a halfmetre swell as- the boats turned into open seas. But with 3km to go Midway had gained an impressive four-boat length lead with North Cronulla tiring and Bulli pushing for second place. Eventually, the heat and the distance took its toll and Bulli pressed home the advantage with a relatively fresh crew to finish second. The second New Zealand boat Piha put in a» courageous effort and was placed eighth at the end of the first leg.
