Murgatroyd men’s winner

PA Levin The Upper Hutt carpenter, David Murgatroyd, scored a brillant win in the men’s individual section of the triathlon yesterday. Murgatroyd’s superior fitness came through as he was behind last year’s winner, Roger Nevatt of Palmerston North, going into the last running section of the event.

His obvious strength and running ability enabled him to overhaul Nevatt to run out a surprisingly easy winner by 455. Murgatroyd finished fourth in the event last year.

The Christchurch triathlete Dave Dennis finished strongly for third. Murgatroyd’s time of lhr 52m 37s was well inside the target time of lhr 55min, orginally set by the organisers, which could have won him the bonus of $50,000.

The bonus was withdrawn late last Thursday night after new conditions were laid down by the underwriters, Lloyds of London.

The organisers reduced the cycling tour by Ikm before the start, then, due to an error by a marshal, the canoeing course was further

reduced by I.skm. The Waitara couple Bernard and Sandy Fletcher scored a remarkable double.

Sandy Fletcher won the women’s individual event for the second year running while her husband Bernard took out the veteran men’s finishing a creditable sixth overall.

Sandy Fletcher finished more than 30min ahead of the next woman home, Anna Ballara of Wellington. The first junior to complete the course was Paul Lewis of Palmerston North who finished in twenty-ninth place to win the junior title. Results:
